There clearly is worship going on, look up any one of a hundred videos on youtube of people crawling over and trampling each-other while trying to put their hands on statues and relics. If there is such a thing as appropriate and responsible Marian devotion there are millions of Roman Catholics who go far beyond that line into genuine idol worship and your institutional refusal to police that excess is why nobody believes you when you claim Marian devotion isn't categorically false-worship.

Dawg the Roman church has had to remove almost 100 saints from canonization in the 60's because they were determined to be unsubstantiated. Or how about how the Buddha has been venerated as a saint under the name Josaphat since the 8th century.
