Most of your income will be passively generated, either from taxes or from the civilian economy. Taxes are simple, have lots of pops and keep them happy so they won't get upset over high tax rates. Also IIRC happy pops reproduce faster so it helps with that too. The civilian economy is a bit intangible but again, having lots of pops helps. It mostly grows alongside your empire, though you can help it out by researching stuff like better civilian ships, and letting them use your state spaceports to build civilian ships when idle.

Early colonization is a big drain on your income since new colonies just cost upkeep while contributing next to nothing, but it's almost always worth taking the hit as long as the suitability is good. The sooner you start developing your colonies and growing more pops, the better off your economy will be in the long run. So don't delay basic colonization tech any longer than you have to.

Also, turn off automatic building for pretty much everything. The AI tends to build a lot of unnecessary crap early on which only wastes money. Keep your fleets lean, only build stations where you actually get something useful out of them (no need to build mining stations on iron asteroids if you've already got an iron surplus, for example), don't build any planetary buildings at the start (they are expensive and need upkeep), and don't spam gifts on everyone like the AI will often direct you to do, even if you're peaceful. Either set it all to Manual, or set it to Suggest and look at the AI suggestions with a critical eye. Once you've got your economy up and running you can be less frugal, but early on every move counts.
