Perfectly doable. The total war style of 300 man units having the same weapon doesn't need to be followed. I've been playing the graviteam games lately and you have fairly large amounts of men in the tactical battles subdivided into mixed arms platoons who are carrying a bunch of different weapons with different ballistics and effects. It's all very detailed and done by a small team. It's a very different type of warfare of course, but it is doable. Now that series is made by a Ukrainian autist(s) who's obsessed with WW2 and has good access to both the battlefields they're portraying and comprehensive documentation of the battles. Now of course it's much more difficult to research early modern period battles. There's also a much smaller pool of people who are interested in that kind of thing.
