This always pissed me off. They kinda fixed it. WH3 has 2 difficulty sliders. 1 for how smart the ai is and 1 for ai cheats. I always leave ai cheats off. Also a lot of newer lords have a way to teleport around the map, so the AI attacking your massive boarder is less of a problem. The campaign map design is also way better in immortal empires. There are more chokepoints. The battlemaps are objectively worse though.

Spamming auto-resolve kinda ruins the game. It becomes way more enjoyable if you set a limit like "Don't auto resolve battles against a major enemy lord". Also lategame in WH3 stays hard, because chaos starts snowballing like crazy. You can't auto resolve them as easily, because the auto resolve assumes they'll win. Or just play Skaven. Auto resolve always assumes you'll lose.

It's kinda a mixed bag. Managing the slave economy with caravans as chaos dwarves is cool. Getting buffs for gamey mechanics is kinda lame, which is their goto solution for everything.
