And OP, im stuck at the same place as you. Ive tried many other games, yes, but none of them satisfy me as FF1, DQ1, DQ3, Wizardry and Etrian Odyssey do.
And yet, I feel like, in fact, I wished there was a game that took the best on all of them and made a perfect game altogether.
In my search, Ive played Pool of Radiance, one of the Gold box games, and It took some time getting used to, but It was a great although Very different experience. But there are some similarities between them, especially given how old School Wizardry wasnvery inspired by D&D combat system
Still, hopefully this retro revival Will being something worth it. There is a Indie on Steam called scarmonde that does a Nice homage to ff1 and might be up your alley.
