You can play literally whatever you want in Golden Sun and do just fine. Not having the exact strongest class or summon combination is a non-issue for the game.

Anyway, to actually answer your question I love Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth's combat. There's a lot of moving parts to it, but the basics are
>Each member of your party has a position and associated button
>You press their button to make them attack (game's still turn based)
Which is a pretty simple turn based system with some real time timing added in, but you have to account for
>juggling
You get bonus xp from keeping enemies in the air by timing your attacks right
>combos
Creating a high combo multiplier on your turn by stacking hits lets you charge up to use a finisher move
>who's using the finisher
Every single party member has their own finisher when you get the prompt you have to decide who's doing it. Some are just weak, some have high damage, some have okay-low damage but have a high number of hits, which lets you stack the combo meter, meaning you can chain finishers by using all the high combo ones first
>cooldown
Casting spells and using finishers gives you a cooldown before that character can do those things again. Juggling enemies can produce crystals that reduce the cooldown time
>attack height, order, and energy
Characters can have up to 3 energy which can give them up to 3 attacks per turn, which is dependent on the exact weapon they have equipped. You can change the order the attacks occur in, and each will do slightly different damage, have a different number of hits for combo build up, and target a different height. Some enemies will block your initial attacks, so you have to guard break them by using an attack and immediately following up with an attack of a different height.
