ToME is less grindy and more tedious. By just doing dungeons of your level you'll be whatever you need to be, but the endgame has a bit more content and few too many enemies (who are tankier by this point) than it really needs so it starts to drag.

There's a RL out right now called Mangui based upon Korean folklore. It's very simple (no diagonol movement, limited number of abilities to pick from) and quite fun. It's currently free, though the devs said they're gonna make it paid soon (anyone who picks it up while free doesn't have to pay).
