I'd say streamers are a minority. But a lot of players today are the same kids from back then, and now they're in their 30s and 40s. They come home after a long day and have about 2 hours left for vidya. They want casual and mindless entertainment. They want to play and not read or study. I can't blame them. Add to that casuals and the younguns who grew up under constant bombardment with "content" + investors who don't give a shit about good games, and you get the current landscape. It just werks. AAA = $$$. Vidya quality has gone down ever since vidya became mainstream. And RPGs have REALLY suffered from this development.

Ever heard of "second screen"? One of the parameters Netflix uses to evaluate whether an IP is worth producing is if it's "second screen" enough. They know that most people can't or won't concentrate on one thing for more than half an hour max, and then they will start staring at their phones while Netflix is on. If something is second screen enough then that means that key points in the plot are being repeated multiple times so you can't miss them, otherwise the viewer will just disengage. It's inclusion politics for the modern brain-damaged man.
Everything wants your attention in the modern world. I think people are tired of it but at the same time, they can't resist it, because all this stuff is engineered to get you hooked.
