Genma is the best. Not only does it let you teleport through obstacles, it reduces the time until your next turn after moving. I often have one on each team plus extra in reserve
Megami is also very useful. They generally have good stats and the racial skill is ideal for healing allies. When you unlock the next one, get more than one
I like to give my (minmaxed) MC a snake. That way he can outspeed enemies without needing to spend his turn initiating attacks
Tyrants are good but not necessary on the MC's team, because he already has drain
Wilder is OK, particularly on yuzu to make up for her low movement
Sometimes it helps to have a vile and a kishin in reserve so you can pull them out when you need one extra attack to end the battle
some specific demons are worth getting to learn skills you can transfer to better demons

Some stat requirements to consider when building your MC: ~~ice dance (6 agi), endure (6 vit), holy dance (8 str), extra one (14 agi). Otherwise pump mag until maxed~~

Obviously it's cheaper to get low level demons and fuse up. e.g. fuse orcus then fuse with a level ~20 to get a level ~40
If you really want to break the game with the fusion system, buy low level demons with "watchful" from the demon auction whenever possible. Fuse them into other low level demons then into elementals, waiting a battle each time so the demon levels up on the bench. Then use those elementals to upgrade other demons while carrying over extra stat points.
One especially effective example is genma hanuman + aeros -> cu chulainn. Then you can use cu chulainn to create more demons with excellent passive skills and good stat boosts, and replace with another cu chulainn through the same process.
