It doesn't. The combat is so slow, easy, and boring. Gone is the speed and tension from Zelda 2. The animations are good, but nothing compared to how dynamic and responsive Goldeneye feels. "Open" world and exploration are genuinely bad. The world feels limited and cramped yet big and barren at the same time, there is zero feeling of emergent gameplay. Dungeon crawling has been replaced by block pushing and metroid esque puzzleshit, compare that to Death by the Sword from the same year where the dungeon could kill you at any given moment. The "RPG" aspect is the most atrocious of them all. I know it's not supposed to be an RPG, but you won't get any feel of progression from your adventure. Megaman Legends and many other action adventure games nailed that years before.

You've got to be insane or clueless about video games to even consider giving that title to OoT. Competing against Diablo, Daggerfall, Grand Theft Auto, Fallout 1&2, Dungeon Keeper, Quake 3, Driver, MechWarrior 2&3, Outcast, OoT shouldn't have won any awards. It's among the most sterile modern AAA feeling fifth gen console games I've ever played. Playing it makes you feel more like watching the most generic bland fantasy anime series while walking around and solving puzzles in between episodes than playing a video game. You could say Chrono Trigger and FFVII are also moviegames like that, but at the very least their characters and writing aren't nearly as bland.
