Anyone who looks at Pokemon and goes "it's just a generic JRPG" is a retard. Pokemon's gameplay was fucking groundbreaking in a way that no other JRPG has done before or since: It actually managed to come up with a fun system for a PvP JRPG. For god's sake, even today there are still people who only play the games for their multiplayer combat system. That's how well-crafted Pokemon's gameplay is.

If you're just looking at them as single-player RPGs, then yeah, you can point to a bunch of other games that did similar things. But that's not what Pokemon is. The combat is so heavily built around PvP that even the single-player campaign is framed as you going around having PvP matches with NPCs.
