The more explicit, detailed, and literal a work is, the less room there is to fill in the blanks with your imagination.
Compare these identical stories with varying levels of detail:
>A person walked to the store.
>A woman walked to the grocery store.
>A blonde woman walked to Wal-Mart.
>A blonde white woman walked to Wal-Mart in June.
>A blonde white woman in Dallas, Texas walked to Wal-Mart on a hot day in June.
With every added detail, you're forced to imagine something more specific and less of the story is up to your own interpretation. At the beginning, you could have imagined any kind of person walking to any kind of store anywhere in the world, but by the end there's little to no ambiguity about any of it. It's no different with games adding detail and realism and removing abstraction; there comes a point where nothing is left for the player to add in his own imagination because everything is being presented as literally and directly as possible with minimal or no abstraction. Thus, less imagination is required to fill in the blanks and people use their imaginations less because they become reliant on the presentation of the game to provide every possible detail.
