There was very little to give a fuck about in JRPGs when the majority of ones making it into the public consciousness were basically the same shit as above.
Yet X-Play knew an actual quality JRPG when they saw it and were remarkably fair towards them.

Based on how people describe the west's smearing of Japanese games and JRPGs in particular during this period, you'd have expected Shadow motherfucking Hearts to receive 2/5 at best. Had they done a review of Koudelka, it would have indeed received a shit rating because the gameplay is dogwater that can't be salvaged by its great presentation.

I can go through the JRPG reviews X-Play did for a while and pick out plenty of times when they were 100% fair - actually, that's all of them. The only time they gave games shit for being Japanese was when they were SHIT for being Japanese instead of GOOD for being Japanese.
