Mario seemed to do it just fine. I have no qualms with him not killing Bowser, because the whole kidnapping routine feels more like standard procedure than a deep seated and hateful grudge. I don't mind Bowser not dying after a fight because I don't expect a character like him to kill, because to my knowledge Bowser doesn't go around killing. Infact Super Mario Brothers 3 makes every game feel like just a big stageplay, so it kinda plays into the notion that they're not even enemies, and they just play golf on the weekends. It's also funny that I can't remember a bad part of SMRPG. There's no mandatory "you win the fight, but you lose in the cutscene" moments quite as egregious as these JRPGs we're talking about. Ironically, the game adheres to keeping a consistent logic between the story and the gameplay, because they're not that interested in making a deep story. Some examples:

>Mario indeed kills the weapon beasts because they're evil. They only come back later because it's shown that they're mass produced
>Mario beats Belome, but because he's some evil magic spirit, it's plausible that he can run away. The important part is that he doesn't magically beat you in a cutscene afterward, and the water trap comes across as more of a failsafe that doesn't even kill you
>Booster fighting you and then running away is a punishment for you failing the minigame
>Jonathan Jones acknowledges you as the victor and gives you the star, no fuss
>Valentina is shown running away
>Shy Away runs away after you beat MegaSmilax, but he's shown as a coward who can fly, so that's at least some justification
>you only fight dodo by himself if you, again, fail the minigame

I have almost zero problems with this game and its story. It even avoids "revenge is le bad" by letting you just kill Smithy. I don't feel remorse for some evil santa clause robot.
