The gimmicks gradually become a natural part of your gameplan as you learn the character. The gimmicks are also a spectrum, with several being entirely unintrusive (Zetterburn's burn, Clairen's tippers, etc.) and others being deceptively simple (Loxodont's armor, Orcane's puddle). If you look at top level play, players mostly ignore gimmicks - except for the unintrusive ones or, for example, using Forsburn's clone as a projectile.

This is where the gimmicks can suck. Luckily most gimmicks have direct counterplay, but the ones that don't are really annoying at times. It's the classic "fighting the character, not the player" dilemma. It's why I hate Clairen.
