Anon, RPG combat is already abstracted to hell. What you're doing here is misinterpreting RPG abstraction on purpose. In the "reality" of a turn-based game, presumably the party members aren't literally acting one after another, but in parallel. This tells you everything right there. If 2 guys walk up to an enemy but the enemy dies without the 2nd guy having to do anything, then that second guy wasted the time he could have used to attack some other enemy instead. This is true in real life too.

Just I AM SILLY hyperbole that I don't care to engage with, but also like the other guy said, JRPGs aren't good at those things to begin with. JRPGs like SMT try to make interesting turn-based combat systems, so that's where their strength as a genre should be.
