Personally, I don't mind that. In fact, I quite like the ability to do so. On a first playthrough, completely blind, it adds a unique spin but on latter playthroughs being able to build a specific character is damn useful. Especially in New Mystery, its Lunatic Mode kicks my fucking ass and that's before Lunatic Reverse comes into play.
I do agree with you on the other part, though. That's where I was hoping they would take the My Unit system after the more simplistic "three obfuscated options" version in New Mystery. Really being able to get into the specifics, and tweak stats and growths, with reasonable limits of course. Though if they were fun they'd add an unlockable "no limits" customization after beating Lunatic or something, but just getting any kind of system is a start.
