Really pushed the needle towards high gameplay, low story experiences.
FPS games, especially with every controller having an analog stick as standard, were just particularly well-suited for it.
It was a good match, having less need for the large assets that more story-centric games would require.
The PS1 and the Saturn certainly had their own FPS titles, and on those consoles you even had a mouse accessory with limited support for such games.
I'd still much sooner play them on an N64 than a PS1/Saturn with a mouse. They just don't perform as well on the other platforms of that gen.
Obviously in the mid-to-late 90's I'd take a smoking Pentium PC for playing FPS over all of them, but those were 10x the price of the consoles.
