I won't cry over gimmicks one way or the other. But I do largely respect them.
Even if a gimmick ends up shit, if it was bold chances are good I'll respect it anyway.

Even if most gimmicks turn out failed experiments. If some of them end up having been for the better, I'd argue it's worth it.
I'll likely enjoy videogames to one degree or another until the day I die, but I can't deny that the older I've become the more I've started to value innovation. It might sound trite or even downright dumb and stupid but I'm now unironically at the point where I might find myself finding a near objectively worse game more interesting if it just happens to be doing something I haven't seen before.
I genuinely never thought I'd end up having this opinion so strongly. Having had a very gimmick-averse attitude for most of my life. But it's become more and more apparent to me as I've grown older that new media really is just repackaged ideas from older media. To a degree that might just be inevitable, but now that I've already had all these experiences literally hundreds upon hundreds and even more times, repackaged in countless different ways. Its appeal really is lessened. So when an experience you've experienced less, or maybe not at all, actually presents itself. That immediately presents a unique appeal that most media lacks.

Gimmicks also gives us industry improvements from time to time. Like controllers with gyroscopes or the paired dual-controller schemes that the Switch and VR have. If not just things like rumble.
