Blandness or things feeling off or slightly off are often hated more so than outright bad. It is mostly about expectations. Star Wars had huge amounts of hype and when the prequels felt off for many it felt like a bigger betrayal. Reboots, remakes, sequels, prequels all have this added pressure and people feel like there is a pattern of flopping so adjust their expectations accordingly. There is a famous fanzine (fan magazine) that ceased publication because it felt that Empire Strikes Back was a meaningless and depressing movie not in-keeping with the original Star Wars. People have always complained past a well liked original. Fans both want things to remain the same whilst also being different. Bit like that Simpsons joke:
