The second episode went more accurately like this:
>the detective who arrested the kid visits the school to find the knife
>his partner, a woman, is a jaded cynic who has a snarky comment at every turn
>the school is portrayed as chaotic and the teachers clueless and somewhat apathetic
>the detective spends the first half of the episode just accomplishing nothing much but getting mocked by the kids and watching the school work
>meanwhile a girl who was friend of the victim attacks another kid during a fire drill
>later the detective's son who happens to study at the same school pulls him into a room to explain what an incel is and that the victim had been calling the killer an incel on instagram which the entire investigation did not know about
>they also have a little tropey "you're not there for me dad you never call me son" drama moment
>his partner has a long lamenting session about how girl victims don't get any media attention and talks about how her childhood was good, the moral implication is obviously that good teachers were lacking for the would-be killer
>detective goes to ask the kid attacked during the fire drill some more questions, he fucking books it
>after a chase sequence the other kid is caught, admits to being an accomplice, and that the killer's knife was his own
>that kid gets arrested, then the detective takes the rest of the day off to reconnect with his son
which is not as cynical as I may have put it. But the point stands, they highlight environmental factors in driving the killing that obviously can't be solved with quick reforms.

The detective is black btw. Race is never brought up as a topic the whole series on either side.
