There was never countrywide hysteria over this. But after the Tate murder there was hysteria around Los Angeles, but not as bad as the Nightstalker hysteria. You had people riding around in cars at night with guns looking for anything suspicious and people afraid to go out alone in the city. To the rest of the country it only became interesting when Tate died because she was famous and the whole serial killer angle was pushed for ratings. The hippie thing never actually died and they just turned from hallucinogens and weed to cocaine and became yuppie degenerates. The CIA did a shit job of change because the '70s and '80s were filled with even more degeneracy thanks to cocaine and no AIDS to keep them in check. The only real CIA connection that people rarely cover is the Bobby Kennedy assassination that occurred a year before just a few miles away. The local elites via the CIA had more assets than just Manson and they used them for Kennedy.
