Book Bond was also often much more down-to-Earth than the movies. DAF is just a book about Bond killing a pair of diamond smugglers, and SPECTRE doesn't even show up in the FRWL book.

Besides, it doesn't matter at all that CR breaks the mold in some ways. Licence to Kill and OHMSS are mold-breakers in certain ways, and they're great. Bond doesn't get the girl in OHMSS, and Licence to Kill is a revenge film where the villain is a drug lord straight out of Scarface.
