Human psychology alone trends towards rooting for the underdogs, its why rigged elections in america historically tried to suppress the voters ability to even see or interact with outsider candidates, like Ron Paul when Obama was running.

to be fair thats allowed them to get away with some of the edgiest jokes on mainstream television ever, the censors would never allow half the stuff they used to do if they wrote their scripts and polished them weeks in advance.

Also the writing process behind episodes like that christmas anti-christ one with the cuddly animals was very different to how i imagined it, and that was one of their funniest episodes ever.
