But nothing stops you from not going to those places though. You don't have to go to Rome for the photo tour, you can go to tons of other spots in Italy instead. You're coming at this from an "anti social media" POV but it seems excessively concerned about what others think about it. "Exploration is dead because instagram ruined it" is a ridiculous take when you can just actively choose to explore what social media hasn't discovered. Hell, I've found plenty of hidden gems thanks to social media that are still almost completely tourist-free because most tourists won't go out of the way to explore like I will. There are tons of social media posts about the Bentonite Hills or Swing Arm City in Utah, almost no one will actually fucking be there when you get there though, they hightailed it to Arches national park instead for the social media photo. Even then, a lot of those big social media landmarks are still stunning to see in person.

thats a YOU problem, if you're socially capable and outgoing there is literally nothing is stopping you from befriending locals. There's a lot of "what do others think about this" and too little "I will go live and enjoy my life as I see fit".
