I was visiting China (mostly Zhejian province) through 2000s to mid/late 2010s. Time when foreigners stopped being a rarity is exactly when they (Chinese) started building "a tonne of stuff". Apart for biggest cities, pre-open China was basically rows of small, cold, not plumbed and barely electified houses and bunch of wet markets. Factories replacing sweatshops and skyscrapers starting to grow up like fungus is times after China joined WTO in the end of 2001.

Era of fastest development is exactly when European-looking people were most frequent on streets of Chinese cities. I've even seen black people (even with Jamaican accent) in Keqiao and Shaoxing around 2010. It was peak, prosperous, optimistic China, before Xi came to power and started turning it into totalitarian dystopia. In late 2000s I was able to use all possible services (foreign or local). Decade later I wasn't even able to buy a train ticket without help of Chinese friends. Right before covid even my visa application was rejected for ridiculous reasons.

They seem to ease things little bit lately (I no longer need visa), but fuck emperor Xi, all commie Chinks and their genocidal government. Also free Tibet and Taiwan is only true China!

It was basically premium China. Like 5-10 years ahead. In early 2000s it started feeling less like budget version of Japan and more like less autistic version of Japan that jumped on internet era.

Basically froze in time since 1997. You literally still need pocket full of coins all the time, because country didn't developed much above coin-op era of 90s. So if you want to know how Koreans and Chinese wanted their countries to look like in early 2000s, just go to Japan and see.

However after couple of decades both Seoul and Shanghai look like everyone expected Tokyo to look like in the future. I'm posting Singapore to see if someone comments before reading this.
