Inflationary pressure all across South America has been strong ever since COVID. Once the official exchange rate was adjusted to more or less match the blue dollar rate, the artificial price controls which were hampering the local economy were removed. Another fact: any time a bunch of rich dorker faggots show up, it's only a matter of time before the locals discover that they are fine with paying 2 or 3 times the going rate for an apartment and dinner. There is a flurry of remodeling to make things look modern and luxurious, and voila! Gentrification.

I'd recommend Indonesia over India if you're looking to povertymaxx. Reportedly it's one of the few countries on Earth where prices are stagnant or even declining, as its economy has been struggling of late.

I haven't booked a room in over six weeks of travel now. However, I will only do this in a part of the world where lodging supply exceeds demand by a very comfortable margin. In my experience with high-demand cities, the rate you get booking a night or two in advance is nearly always lower than the cash walk-in rate for the pleasant properties. The owners would rather have Agoda handle the payments, they do not trust the handling of large sums of cash to their housekeepers and front desk staff.

Worst is when you jump on a slight discount but end up in an awful room as a consequence (i.e. trying to pay $40/night in Istanbul instead of getting a respectable place for $50/night).
