I agree that people pretending that dangerous cities are myths, or just being excessively macho/cavalier about safety are irritating. But ACKSHUALLY, it’s an indisputable fact that aggregate crime statistics aren’t great predictors of personal risk/safety for any one individual. Lots of the violence in most statistically violent places isn’t random or directed at tourists. It’s criminals shooting (etc.) other criminals, sometimes pretty far from anywhere a visitor is likely to wander.

The two overlap a lot, sure. But the raw numbers don’t necessarily tell someone what they really need to know.
