What logistical nightmare are you talking about? I went there by road from Puerto Natales which has frequent flights from/to Santiago on peak seasons, and its only a 2 hr drive from there. I also did a side trip to El Calafate before going to TdP.

No sugarcoating but yes, the downside of it all is you have to spend a fortune if you really want to experience TdP at its best. And no, it's not packed as you might think. The Las Torres hike was full of hikers but not once did I feel like I was on the streets of Rome. You do not need to be a multi trekker but same as above, you need to stay inside the park so you have a roof over your head after every excursion.
Also speaking of experience, it's not the rain that would frustrate you but rather, it's the loud strong winds that feels like you'd get blown away. And strong winds are quite common during peak season.
