I think you already know. Of course not. But I’ve been to a lot of smaller towns that at least look the part, and more than a few with active little centers.

I can’t imagine thinking this would be a good thing. Even in the most picture-postcard beautiful small town with the happiest/most successful locals on earth, what people know about their neighbors is largely gossip, slander, and hostility. I actually spent quite a while in a smaller town (pop. ~4000, so maybe getting too big for you) where there was a lot of shared knowledge about the community, an ensemble of instantly recognizable main characters, and a very engaged, busybody kind of central committee (mostly downtown business owners) who kept tabs on the town overall. People were definitely sticking their noses into a majority of goings on, and talking about it. So while it would be an exaggeration to say that everyone knew each other, some people knew, or at least knew of, just about everyone. But that doesn’t mean they LIKED them. Small towns are boring. Petty grudges and rumormongering kill time.

Festivities don’t really spring up organically, or belong to towns in general. They’re put on by chambers of commerce, clubs, churches, sponsoring organizations, and other community subsets, each with their own politics, agendas, and grudges.

And all that said, the best, Hallmarkiest community festivity I’ve experienced had nothing to do with Christmas—it was the Lake Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Pumpkin Regatta in Maine. Much beloved by locals (many of whom hate one another, most of whom hate but also depend economically on “summer people,” or tourists), not at all organic/spontaneous.
