The only times I chat with people are when they insist on chatting with me, which invariably means that they speak English. Otherwise, the language barrier helps maintain comfy silence broken only by benevolent smiles and polite words.
Learning the names of local dishes is vital to unlocking the full range of cuisine, IMO. No, you can't always count on Google Translate, which is incapable of making sense of a menu in Lao script, for example. Numbers are another no-brainer, they make transactions so much easier.
