Renunciation isn’t an option for me; I’ve just got the one citizenship and a permanent residence. But the only reason I could imagine wanting to renounce as a US-elsewhere dual citizen would be for tax benefits, and they don’t make that easy for HNW people. Rich dual citizens are a cash cow for the IRS.

So have I, but I guess I’m less of a pessimist than you are. I have concluded that everywhere has distinctive shit and less shit aspects (no exceptions anywhere I have been), and my happiness in any given place depends on whether the shit is outweighing the less-shit in a particular circumstance. I’m sure I might find that some places are all shit, all the time, or close enough to it that I would find it impossible to enjoy myself there, but nowhere is 0% shit.

As suggested above, I don’t think it’s uniformly best—if we’re comparing America and Europe, I think America is in general immeasurably better at convenience culture and most aspects of consumer capitalism; Murka is arguably the winner for many types of innovation, as well. Most of Europe leaves the States in the dust when it comes to most concepts of a social safety net, work-life balance, urban planning, and public transportation. Neither is an indisputable winner when it comes to healthcare or education, and nobody has unarguable superiority when it comes to politics, governance, and administration.

I don’t know about the possibly mythical semi-Swede above, but I really don’t think I am. I think anybody who can pull it off, wherever they come from, can benefit from spending some of their life somewhere different.

I am actually headed back to the States this summer, as it happens, and I’m looking forward to at least some parts of it. But I doubt it will be forever, and I am happy about that too.
