Things were calmer than they had been previously in some areas in late 2024, but there was renewed violence in mining and military areas in Kachin State throughout January; separatists took over a garrison town that the junta has since been attempting to reclaim (haven’t heard the latest but active shooting was ongoing as of the end of January), and the air force has bombed KIA-occupied gold and rare earth mining camps. Both sides issued statements saying that they expect active fighting to continue to increase up there for the time being.

It will be interesting and maybe horrifying to see how much direct support China will be willing to lend to the miltary government if their territorial grip on mineral resources continues to erode. They’ve held off so far, but the PRC has been debating sending in troops since at least last November. It will/would be ugly, during and perhaps long after, but it might be the only thing that can save the junta.
