Switzerland here—staying in hostel dorms (~$30-$50/night), eating mostly from supermarkets (you can get a bad loaf of bread for $3 or less, half a kilo of dry pasta for under $2, etc.), and keeping train travel minimal, I’m OP could survive here for at least two weeks with that kind of money. If he wants to go to a sit-down restaurant or bar more than once or twice, or needs a private room, you’re probably right that he’ll be broke inside a week.

But if someone is trying to keep costs to a minimum, Switzerland is obviously a poor choice. Markups of 1.5-3X compared to any of our immediate neighbors are standard for most product categories.

Scandinavia is even worse for a few things, especially booze; literally everywhere else in Europe feels at least a little cheaper than home.

OP, this is a silly question, but you know that. My answer is yes, $2-$3K is enough, maybe more than enough, to support a few weeks’ trip from some countries to some other countries. Your mileage will vary depending on which countries they are, among other factors. I haven’t been to Peru in a long time, but when I went, I paid approx. $500 for my ticket and found decent accommodation in multiple cities in the $30/night range. And food and local transport were both fairly cheap, buses very cheap.
