Far, far fewer than some histrionic news outlets and pearl-clutching old Swiss people would have you believe. Depending on whose crime stats you choose to look at, and how you choose to analyze the data, Switzerland is either the safest country in Europe or the second safest after Finland. Crime, even violent crime, isn’t unheard of, by any means, but it’s comparatively rare and very seldom random.

I live in an inner-city neighborhood that is (again, statistically, so interpretations vary) either the most dangerous in all of Switzerland or very close to it, and the biggest hazard I face on a regular basis is loud drunks on their way home from bars.
