>How would you successfully limit magic?

There are as many ways to limit magic as their are stories. Nearly every fiction that includes magic defines its magic by what it *can't* do as much as what it *can* do. Because limits are what make scenarios difficult, challenges challenging, and protagonists clever for finding ways around them. There is a reason why Gandalf didn't just cast "destroy the ring and kill Sauron" in the first chapter of Fellowship of the Ring. Because while he can do a lot, he can't do that

Classic methods of limit magic include:

> Magic costs the caster something that matters, like sacrificed souls or part of their own lifespan. As a result while magic is *powerful* it is never done casually and often requires a lot of prep work to make sure that you do it right and mitigating the cost to yourself as much as possible
> Magic is extraordinarily difficult to do, and there is a lot that can go wrong. Being able to do magic at all is an extremely impressive feat, enough so that the idea that you would be able to do it on the spot in the middle of a fight is as absurd as telling someone to build a chair from raw materials in the middle of getting attacked. Its just not going to happen, you need time and safety to do magic without blowing yourself up
> Magic costs something to use that isn't necessarily hard to replenish, but efficiency becomes your limiting factor. Yes, you can lift something with your mind. But the further away that something is from you, the more of your magical power it takes to lift something of the same weight such that there's a hard dropoff in your range. This sort of logic and the established rules of magical efficiency color basically all of your spells and how you use them, meaning while there is a lot you CAN do that doesn't mean you can do it to the degree you want, at the distance you want, or to as many things as you need at once.
