Probably not enough interest for d&d to exist without him, since that's where a large part of the interest came from according to Gygax in the 70s.
Not enough content to fill out the fantasy additions to chainmail without him.

In first edition d&d we play as

Thief, now known as rogue gets added in the greyhawk supplement so you can be Bilbo, called specifically Thief, because that's what he was called several times, and most notably he was called thief while in the dungeon with the dragon.
The tavern is where we start the game so many times and seek information because that's where the hobbits met Strider, and in strategic view Ranger gets added so you can pretend to be Aragorn.

Can probably remove all of the settings too.
