No prob. I'll respond with a wall of text tough, so beware.

FWIW my point is that Howard didn't think his action scenes were meant to be "hard coded" as with firearms or not, and he did change between them with ease (reskinning that tale, and clearly hyborian age ships were pretty much already Tortuga-cleared, if the name Tortage wasn't a clue). While RPGS and novels aren't the same medium, I think that it's a pretty damn basic suggestion to take from THE first DND inspiration.
I do agree with him, as in I see very little reasons for action being significantly different with matchlocks or whatever (amusingly enough even shit like "knights don't rule the battlefield anymore" which is kinda true is not very, uh, PC-appliable). Protip: these guys used swords, it's not the wild west.

I certainly think that firearms (up to the 1700s, more or less) are perfectly fine with fantasy as even oral fairytales use them, and certainly that they're not "antichivalric" in any way.

Mind you, you might be right that most people have this idea that they mean the end of an age of wonder or something, but it's a very shallow post-romatic view that not only is wrong as fuck but "mythologizes" the middle ages in a way that doesnt' make sense at all:
1) Middle ages HAD widespread firearms (and if Tolkien didn't use the 13001400s as inspirations, generally fantasy does)
2) if people felt pariticulary different in say the 1500s from the "middle ages" they certainly didn't because castles were obsolete.
3) Why would firearms be more a sign of wonder fading than, I dunno, crossbows? I mean, ok, the average guy wouldn't even know that a Charlemagne paladin didn't have acces to those, but I would suppose a nerd would have an hint about war evolution. I certainly don' feel, uh, that the rebirth of plate armor in western europe makes somehow the wonder of mail times fade away or something, why would firearms revolutionizing battlefields be any different?
