She can no longer be used to cement any alliances through marriage and she can't prove her heritage. She is a just a squeaking pet. I would go back to her father and tell him a story how we unfortunately failed to safe the princess, but during her captivity she befriended a rat. I would then give the rat to a family member who cares and ask them to take good care of it, because it's the last thing that brought the princess comfort. Then I would make sure to tell the DM that I tell the true story of what happened in my diary and the reasons for why I chose to keep this a secret.

Pic related is what I imagine she looks like. Just with rat ears and a rat tail. She looks almost exactly like herself, but everyone just sees her as a random rat incapable of human thought or speech.
