Skeletons with weapons are cool so I picked Vampire Counts.
That was essentially my thought process. Play style does not matter since for the most part the vast majority of the time you spend on your models will be painting them, not playing.
Sometimes I will get the urge to pick up a new army, but it usually passes quickly. Such urges are spurred by FOMO and the excitement of starting something new. This is why so many retards end up with piles of shame, they can't recognize their brains are being tricked into enjoying spending money.

And not just factions, but sub-factions too, like the different Space Marine chapters. GW are a bunch of scummy fucks.

Something that was very useful for me was narrowing down the amount of armies I wanted to 6 ish. Then I started thinking about them in practical terms, like:
>Who would lead them?
>What is their goal?
>How do they wage war?
>~~How expensive would this be?~~
Then I started putting together example armies and judging their coolness.
For Vampire Counts, I already knew I liked skeletons, but why should I pick VC over Tomb Kings? Simple, because I'd rather my army's leader be a badass Necrarch mounted atop a Zombie Dragon with wicked spells, wreaking havoc across Estalian villages, leading hordes of animated undead, than some crummy Pharaoh on a horse in the desert.
You have to narrow it down. I decided against Bretonnia despite loving knights, and cavalry, because I can't stomach fielding shit like peasants and ordinary spearmen in my army. It's boring, and I would not have fun painting them. You have to like everything in the army you're planning on fielding, it all has to spark joy. I narrowly avoided buying into Space Marines because despite Terminators and Dreadnoughts being cool as fuck, an army of just those things is boring and would be repetitive to paint.
