The more interesting thing to me is the ram it came from. Chrysomallus, after rescuing Phrixus, was sacrificed to the gods whereupon he was returned to his rightful place as the constellation Aries.
This means he's a chthonic spirit (one that dies and comes back) and thus he can interact with wraiths, and with this mythic power behind him, he can easily serve as a tribe totem/patron spirit.

Also, to go with a previous idea of the goats pulling Thor's chariot and thus having the sheep associated with transportation, Chrysomallus did fly away with two mortals, right? It could be something to consider.

I wanted to see if Capricornus had a cool myth which could also be associated with a totem, though I don't think it sounds cool enough. If we take the Greek myths, the constellation either represents one of the goats that nursed Zeus (whose horn became the cornucopia), or Pan trying to ran away from Typhon by diving into a river and trying to turn into a fish. It only worked halfway, giving him the lower body of a fish, and Zeus found the moment so funny he immortalized it in the sky. I know that the constellation is also associated with the Babylonian god Ea, but I don't know much more about it.
