I did not mention height a single time in my post. The greatest american football player of all time, Tom Brady, is fairly tall but not athletic at all. That is because even in that sport, there is one position, namely the quarterback, where the other things such as skill and vision that I mentioned can make up for lack of physicality.
Obviously skill and etc. is also going to exist in rugby, especially at the high level, but it is nowhere near as important as in football (as in soccer).
If I showed up to a random field with a bunch of guys I don't know to play rugby and had to pick my team, I would absolutely go for the strongest most athletic looking ones, and so would you or anyone else. For a football match there would be no reason at all to do that, most random strong guys are not even able to control a ball or make a simple pass. But they are able to grab a ball with their hands and run forward
