the coursework load seems like your average 1st years coursework in a north american PhD program to me.

seem like this is a European PhD program. in the north american system you usually don't get this kind of requirement but something like your thesis should contribute originally and substantially to the literature. that could range anywhere from 0-1 papers (for mathematics) to 3-10 papers (for "easier" fields like machine learning). that's why some PhD students in north america take 8 years to graduate.
