Yes, most people who are homeless for years have severe mental health struggles. I personally was once one of those insane homeless people living on the streets and in and out of shelters for about a decade.

Can you use your savings instead to pay rent at a place for a couple months? Like to handle the move-in costs and rent etc? I think being on a lease and having tenant's rights and having a safer place to sleep than a car would probably be my goal. There are also likely programs that will help you get housing because you have no place to stay (you'd qualify as homeless to a helping organization) and some savings. If you can rent a small place or even a room and have tenant's rights (which means they can't just kick you out, they have to go through a legal process which gives you many rights during it), you can use your job to save for a boat at the same time as you have an apartment or room?

Have you heard about income-driven repayment? Someone I know did this and eventually the process snowballed into their loans being forgiven because they're mentally ill. Even just getting on the basic IDR shit would help you most likely.
