So, it does kind of depend on the facial structure of the person you're shooting, so there's a bit of leeway, however:
>Head and shoulders portraits
anywhere between 80-160mm is pretty common.
>full body portraits
50-100mm is common since you're stepping further back to get everything in frame
>group / wide portraits (you should be shooting vertically for the others)
24-100mm depending on if you're just going for faces or upper body or whole body.

People with rounder faces actually benefit going a shorter focal length and getting a bit closer as it slims them down (aka makes them look not so fat), but you generally don't want to go lower than 80mm for most people for headshots.
