Yes they do and they will get mad at you if you point out that you can find this crap everywhere for way less than ebay prices and even if you can't find exactly what you are looking for there is always the option to trade towards it lowering the cost substantially.
I've bought and sold shit online for about 2 decades and now I am almost 90% into photography gear because there are so many different types of people buying and selling for so many different reasons that the task of making an easy buck and lowering the cost of my own collection of vintage lenses is as easy as a breeze.
I tried explaining how to do it to some other collectors on a different forum and all I got in return was contempt as if I was this terrible monster even though I have never lowballed anyone or lied, always paid asking price etc. It was a fascinating experience. So yes, they prefer to pay retail from some "experienced company" i.e. an "authority" instead of trying to source for themselves even though it requires way, way less knowledge and luck than making money/finding good deals in say collectibles.
The fact of the matter is that old film era gear is plentiful, people have this stuff stored away and their original owners die all the time leaving their relatives with the task of selling it, not caring about value because they may be well off people that gives the thought of "going to someone else than throwing it away" higher value than a monetary one etc, some just sell everything as a lot not considering that individual parts of a lot can be big money, but these folks I am talking about would then say to themselves "Its a scam" and then asking the seller all sorts of questions and wanting all sorts of guarantees maybe even getting the seller to second-guess his sale in the process.
In short, If you pay retail for film era photography gear you are a blithering idiot.
