Tell me you have never worked in parks without telling me you've never worked in parks. At my park, we have two full time staff, a grounds manager and a programming manager. Between us and a handful of part time staff (6) and volunteers (2) we manage 1800 acres, a functional farm, two boat launches for the state, run a hunt program for deer, turkey, and waterfowl, and serve about 85k guests per year on a 310k/year budget. Grounds manager gets 42k and a house, programming manager gets 44k and no house both of us work 55 hour weeks for most of the year 65+ in September and October, get one day off a week, and have random bullshit schedules to accommodate night/weekend programming. We have exactly one piece of equipment (our truck) manufactured after Jan 1st, 2000 and we are responsible for all but the most serious maintenance/repairs on our equipment. I don't like what's happening to nps, it feels like shock and awe for the sake of shock and awe while all the deeply entrenched boomers responsible for the bloat face zero consequence, but I'm beyond sick of this narrative of "these poor overworked park Rangers who never did anything wrong and gave 110% all day every day". Nps jobs are the easiest, best paid, lowest effort jobs in the entire parks field. I do more before lunch on monday than most of them do in a week. What exactly did they think was going to happen? I'm not saying they should work as hard as I have too, we genuinely are overworked, underfunded, and underpaid, and it's not fair to expect that from people. But they were taking advantage of a good thing and this is the consequence of that. There is fat to trim and it needs trimmed, I hope it actually does get trimmed, and I hope the poor grunts at the bottom are left alone past actually doing their jobs, but let's not pretend for a second that they were hurting before any of this shit, at least compared to every other person who works in parks outside the nps.
