Mortality rates are incredibly high and everyone that dies becomes a walker, so they outnumber the living 5,000 to one, but they never age, or grow tired, or succumb to illness or the elements. Realistically zombies would not even exist, but in-universe zombies don't decay. They can only be killed by trauma to the brain. Rebuilding would be difficult, and larger countries like the US would take centuries to recover. Hostile survivor groups aside, the zombies are known to eat other mammals we depend on for survival. The livestock and game populations would plummet, and the longer you took to organize and finally wipe the fuckers out, the worse things would get. Our energy infrastructure gone, beasts of burden either dead or highly contested. Global supply chains rekt. There'd be limited access to meat, fur, and leather. This would set humanity thousands of years back.
