I can't disagree with you on that; thats the main problem with most people and cars. I even got it recently buying my used car: I kept getting told by people get the truck I really want because I work hard and deserve to have something really nice. That would've been the difference between going $22k in debt and $45k in debt. Not a gigantic number, but for the monthly payments an the albatross of a car payment for minimum 3 years on the cheap one and 6 years on the expensive one I just couldn't do it. But so many others think "yeah, I can afford $1000 a month, plus insurance, for 90 months!" and they end up just poor as shit at all times because of it.

Part of the problem is basically anyone with a pulse can get an auto loan and those loans can roll negative equity into some preposterous 84 month loan so why would anyone go from a $60k car they can't afford into a $10k car they can? Nobody ever wants to downgrade in any part of their life, ever.
Another part of the used car pricing problem is cars have simply gotten better; cars are no longer scrap at 100k miles. And arguably aren't scrap at 150k or even 200k. Yes some are complete junk and fail much earlier than that, but you're not willing to pay $5k to roll the dice on something. Secondarily, because parts are so expensive and most people simply cannot work on 2020+ cars, you're going to pay a lot more to do simple repairs at the mechanic. Your average person isn't going to buy an $8k 200kmi car then drop a few hundred per month (on average) for a year or two to keep the car going.

tl;dr its a perfect storm making most used cars kinda dumb to buy.
