The music industry no longer focuses on rock because pop has largely won the competition of efficiently making simple catchy songs. Many people liked rock as pop music and would have listened to pop blues or pop jazz or pop folk if it were the dominant style, so those same kinds of people now listen to electronic/dance pop and so on.
People who like rock because they grew up with it are mostly going to listen to the albums of their youth and glorified tribute acts heavily derived from it.
People listening to rock for drive, distortion, interesting melody, or the other defining traits of rock descendants have stuck with their subgenres of choice.

Prog rock is cool, but it's trapped in the 70's, plus a handful of bands who rose to fame in the 70's but continued to push and adapt (i.e. King Crimson). /metal/ spits on Sabbath and Priest more often than I see /prog/ do the same for Yes or Gentle Giant. Not that it would be deserved, but it shows a sense of evolution. I know there is avant-prog and all, but the fact you posted Bruford instead of Vander or the guy from Ruins shows that the extremes of prog rock are less dominant that the extremes of metal.
